Yoga, meaning union, is ultimately about union with the Universe. To do that, we must first know and unite with ourselves by asking, Who am I?

Yoga offers us the opportunity to use the tools of asana, meditation, and satsanga to answer this timeless question.
It also gives us a chance to move and heal, as well as rest, rejoice, and celebrate life.

Join Nicole & Paul for 7 glorious days in Mexico to explore all that yoga offers and discover how it can enhance every aspect of your life through asana, pranayama, meditation, satsanga, yoga nidra relaxation, kirtan chanting & more.

Hi!

I am Nicole Vahlkamp

I can’t wait to welcome you to my second Hatha yoga retreat at the enchantingly beautiful Mar de Jade Retreat Center in Chacala, Mexico!

Six years ago, I embarked on a yoga retreat that would change my life forever. On this retreat, I discovered a lineage, philosophy, and practice that has since become the backbone of my life.
I am honored to co-teach this hatha yoga retreat with one of my very first teachers and the man who introduced me to Sivananda yoga, Paul (Shambu) Weitz.

Paul and I have both explored many forms of yoga and have individually found the classical hatha Sivananda style to be the most powerful and transformative. It is our honor and pleasure to invite you to join us for a full week of Sivananda yoga immersion that we hope will impact your lives as profoundly as it has ours.
This is the beginning of a true transformation.

Join us in Mexico and learn the tools to go deeper into your spiritual practice. Enjoy daily yoga, meditation, satsang and joyful movement in the process.
This retreat will give you the many gifts of inspired, aligned, joyful living that only yoga can!

Simply put, yoga is magical and so is this location.
Please join us!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

I had been feeling stuck in my life in many ways and when an email popped up in my inbox from Nicole describing a retreat where the theme was Finding Your Inner Compass, well I took this as a sign. This experience would be way out of my comfort zone as I have not done any yoga recently or even much in my whole life.

However, I felt safer in taking the plunge to commit because I already knew Nicole, her mom, and a very close family friend of mine wanted to come as well. Also, I already knew a few people that had been to Mar de Jade before and just raved about how wonderful it was. This was the time to do it as I had been yearning for change, but couldn't figure out how to obtain it on my own.

I am so grateful I did indeed take the plunge and join the retreat as it was a magical experience from start to end. The place, the participants, the co-leaders, the food, and even the the other retreat groups made this such a special journey. Nicole's yoga classes and meditation sessions were very powerful, as were the private sessions with her. The optional excursions really added a lot to our week as well and were very enjoyable.

My goal at the end of the retreat was to start taking yoga again at home and to start applying for jobs because I am feeling so stuck in my current career. Things are changing for me upon my return. I adopted a rescue dog as soon as I came home which has been a huge adjustment. Now that he is getting settled, I am starting to focus on me again. I took a yoga class and have been applying to jobs. The change, albeit slow, is happening. There is a feeling of hopefulness that I have not known in a long time and I am very grateful for everyone involved in this wonderful experience.”

Rebecca Resheff, Mar de Jade Retreat participant with Nicole, April 2019

The Finding your Inner compass retreat in Mexico was absolutely amazing! The place was so beautiful, peaceful and full of positive energy.the food was so healthy and delicious and the people gorgeous.

Everybody was so helpful and friendly whether  the teachers or the staff or other attendees. I've met loads of interesting people and made new friends.

The beach and the sound of the waves were just out of this world.i really felt blissful there.
Th
e classes and meditations we did were useful and absolutely relaxing and I got to know myself better and did a lot of self empowering self reflection. We have also learned various self empowerment tools we can use in the future. I have also got a couple of wonderful freebees like energy treatment with Nicole and bioenergetic healers and also a journey dance class. I am soo grateful for this amazing retreat which I enjoyed immensely! It was totally worth the money!

Thank you much my wonderful teachers Nicole, Jenny, my wonderful classmates And all other amazing people who were there😘❤️🤩😍

Dita Dobrikova,  Mar de Jade Retreat participant with Nicole, April 2019

“I had been on many yoga retreats in the past and thought this yoga retreat would be similar to all the others. (not much new and different)  I wanted to go partly to be with my daughter Nicole who was co-leading it and also to be in a warm place doing yoga which I love.

To my delight and surprise this yoga retreat was very different!

It included not only  lovely yoga classes  with Nicole, but also some  meaningful, relevant  workshops on how to develop and expand my inner compass-  a topic I hadn’t thought much about.  I liked the group process during which I thought about my life purpose and how to fulfill it and I related as others shared their personal journeys, successes and challenges.

The workshops  were relevant and useful.  I came away with some new tools and developed an updated daily spiritual practice to take home.

The major takeaways for me:

  • I made some lasting friendships.
  • I have been practicing yoga more on my own at home.
  • I have a new daily, regular spiritual routine.
  • I  now practice a meditation I learned from Nicole on how to contact and communicate with  an inner guide who imparts wisdom to me.
  • In summary I’m looking forward to and excited about the upcoming May retreat.
  • (and the food was gourmet delicious)
  • I would definitely recommend this retreat to others and I’m planning to go on the retreat again in May!

I have followed his practice everywhere he has taught, and I am so grateful that he has been teaching at Reach in Glencoe. His  teaching has evolved through the years, and he brings a true knowledge, devotion, and integrity to all he does. Paul is so humble, and he brings levity to his classes. Mar de Jade is situated on the most pristine bay on the Riviera Nayarit, with golden sand, coconut trees, and palapa (thatched-roof) restaurants along the shore, surrounded by tropical jungle mountainsides. Home to approximately 400 residents, the town’s unhurried lifestyle is complemented by the welcoming and friendly attitude of locals.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO ENTER MEXICO?

Immigration regulations require that you have a valid passport for travel to Mexico.

If you have a US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or European passport you will be granted a tourist visa once you arrive in Mexico and pass through customs.

If your passport is from another country please check for any other visa requirements. Most tourist visas are issued for 30 or 90 days, however you can ask the immigration officer to make it for up to 180 days if you plan to stay longer in Mexico. Keep you tourist visa in a safe place, as you will need it upon exiting Mexico. If you lose your tourist visa you need to be at the airport 4 hours before your flight on your departure day and pay a $30 USD fine.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?

As Chacala is located in the Tropic of Cancer, the weather and vegetation is tropical with warm ocean water suitable for swimming year-round. The dry season is from November through May; days are usually warm (around 80 F.), with cooler mornings and evenings in the winter months (around 65-70 F).

The rainy season is from mid-June through October with day temperatures in the low 90s F and night temperatures in the high 70s or 80s F. If it rains, it is during the evening hours and is sunny in the day. During this season it’s hotter, more humid and there are more mosquitoes and other bugs. Check the weather forecast here.

ARE THERE INSECTS?

We are in the very fertile tropics. All forms of life thrive! Expect a variety of bugs here: beautiful, ugly, annoying, harmless, phosphorescent. Mosquitoes and gnats mainly come out during rainy season, and sand fleas during the winter. We recommend that guests who are sensitive to bug-bites bring insect repellent. We have not had any reported cases of Zika or other dangerous mosquito-spread diseases. We also have spiders, but not of the poisonous variety. They actually help control the insect population.

DOES MAR DE JADE HAVE INTERNET?

Free WiFi is available in the main dining room, guest lounge and bar area; there is no WiFi in the rooms. Please bring your own device as we do not provide computers, we are happy to print boarding passes at the front desk for guests.

Please note that because we are in a rural location, the internet connection can often be slow or without a signal. We encourage guests to unplug during their stay and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty!

WILL MY CELL PHONE WORK IN MEXICO?

Yes. Rates & International plans can be arranged prior to travel.

For many US carriers, Mexico is no longer considered international and your cell phone should work as if you are in the US at no additional charge.

Your plan and this information should be verified with your specific cell phone company.

Keeping your phone on WiFi mode should not incur any roaming fees. There is WiFi available in the main dining area, but not in the rooms. This will also give you the space and freedom to disconnect from your regular routine.

ARE THE ELECTRICAL OUTLETS THE SAME AS NORTH AMERICA? DO I NEED TO BRING AN ADAPTER?

No, you will not need an adapter if you are travelling from North America, as electrical outlets are North American.

WHAT CURRENCY SHOULD I BRING AND HOW MUCH? IS THERE AN ATM OR BANK CLOSE BY?

Airport transportation and excursions can be paid in US dollars and almost everyone accepts dollars in Mexico.

We suggest bringing $200-$400 USD for travel costs, excursions, tipping, and shopping at the market. We highly suggest you bring extra cash with you or use the ATM at the airport when you arrive to withdraw either USD or Mexican PESOS.

Pesos can both be withdrawn at ATMs and can be used for shopping at the marketplace or buying things in Chacala. However, there are no banks or ATMs in Chacala, the closest is in Las Varas about 15 minute taxi ride inland. There is also an ATM and bank in La Peñita (about 30 minutes from Mar de Jade) where there is a Thursday market which we will be visiting. Most ATMS will give you cash in Mexican Pesos.

We recommend changing at most $50 – $100 USD to Pesos for a week’s stay, which can be done at the airport. Mar de Jade cannot exchange currency (only official exchange places can do this).

IS IT SAFE TO VISIT THIS AREA OF MEXICO?

We appreciate your concern for safety in Mexico. Although we understand that drug related violence has been extensively reported in the U.S. press, we want you to know that it is mostly confined to the border with the United States and a few cities within the areas of drug production.

The entire coastline between Puerto Vallarta and Chacala is extremely safe and continues to receive millions of visitors each year. Local and state law enforcement are closely monitoring and ensuring safety in this area which relies on tourism as the most important sector of the economy (and second largest in Mexico).

Chacala is a small fishing town where visitors and residents alike feel safe to walk any time during the day or night. Children and families play in the area without fear. For a comparison you might think of going to Big Sur or Lake Tahoe and wondering if violence in Los Angeles is something about which to be concerned. We have never had a guest or known of a tourist in our area have any safety issues related to violence in the last three decades we have been open. If you have any other doubts or specific questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

DO I NEED VACCINATIONS?

When traveling to Mexico you do not need special vaccinations and you do not have to worry about infectious disease or Malaria in this part of the country. However, we always recommend speaking to your healthcare provider prior to traveling anywhere.

DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

The best way to protect yourself from any unforeseen circumstance is to purchase trip insurance. We always recommend travel insurance coverage during your vacation.

Travel Insurance can protect you in case:

* you cancel your participation in the yoga retreat;

* retreat is cancelled due to weather, natural disaster;

* not enough participants to run the trip;

* lost baggage

* medical expenses and the cost of repatriation should you become ill or injured.

We recommend TRAVELGUARD, which offers a variety of travel insurances, including the option for a comprehensive “cancel for any reason” policy. If you cancel your retreat – for any reason – your airfare, hotel, retreat costs, etc. up until 48 hours prior to travel, will be covered. This comprehensive package is called the “Gold Package Cancel for Any Reason Policy”. You must contact Travelguard and purchase the policy within 15 days of buying your airline tickets or incurring any costs for any part of your travel. You can also just insure your air tickets. Travelguard can give you quotes for each scenario.

HOW CAN SOMEONE REACH ME IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY?

In the event of an emergency, guests can be reached at the following number +52 (327) 219-4000. Please do not provide relatives with our US 1800 number as this is a reservation line and we are unable to transfer the call to guests.

Yes, if there is availability. Contact Mar de Jade and let them know when you want to arrive or leave. They will be happy to assist you in making arrangements that best suit your vacation.

Alternatively, staying early or later in the city of Puerto Vallarta is an option. The Old Town of Puerto Vallarta is charming with many beautiful markets, artists and galleries. Many retreat participants elect to come a day early and spend a night in Puerto Vallarta, or stay an extra there an extra night before returning home.

IS THERE ALCOHOL ON THE PROPERTY?

Mar de Jade’s restaurant does have a tasteful bar that offers a variety of beer, wine and cocktails available for purchase. As this is a yoga retreat, we recommend restraint and moderation when it comes to alcohol consumption. We trust you to know your limit so that it does not interfere with your practice and overall experience of this spiritual retreat.

On days when energy consultations are booked with Nicole, it is required that no alcohol be consumed before or after the energy work.

CAN MAR DE JADE ACCOMMODATE MY DIETARY RESTRICTIONS?

We want you to thoroughly enjoy your stay with us, and that includes dining experiences.
